Essential oil is not water-soluble
Essential oils are lighter in texture than carrier oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil.
But they are still considered oils, so if they are added to water to make room/body mist, an emulsifier must be added to stabilize the solution.
2. Essential Oils are not preservatives
Essential Oils are not dependable preservatives because “anti-microbial” and “preservative” are not the same thing.
An EO may kill certain microorganisms under laboratory conditions. A preservative system must be reliable enough to protect the complete skincare product from bacteria, yeast, and mold throughout its shelf life and during normal customer use.
3. Oxidation changes safety
Essential Oils are oils that oxidize and will go rancid if not stored properly. So even if a skincare product has essential oil in it, vitamin E or plant extracts are added to prolong and prevent oxidation and to preserve the shelf life of skincare products.
4. There is no universal “safe percentage”
It’s true that there is no universal safe percentage, but I will keep cinnamon and oregano essential oils at 1-5% in skincare products. These 2 essential oils tend to burn sensitive skin.
However, essential oils such as lavender, lemon myrtle, or sweet marjoram can be added to skincare solutions up to 70%. However, it really depends on the kind of product formulations you will be making.
5. More oils do not mean better performance
In the skincare industry, adding more essential oils does not mean the products will be much better than 1-2% EO formulations.
It all goes with the proper formulation set that has been tested by a skincare formulation chemist.
6. Essential Oils do not normally supply meaningful vitamins, proteins or essential fatty acids.
Though Essential Oils are considered potent oils, they do not cover everything a skincare product needs.
EO is just a small part of making a good skincare product, and often makes the product story and marketing gimmick more abundant, sounding more natural when selling to a specific group of customers who prefer a touch of nature.
